My Comic Book is Sold-Out!?
Sometimes, you hear that a comic book issue you wanted is sold-out before it even hits stores! How can this be? First of all, like other forms of commercially packaged entertainment (music, movies, etc.), comic books are created by one company, printed by another, and distributed by still another company. The major distributor of comic books is Diamond. When Diamond receives all of its sales orders from retailers (the comic book shop owners), they send these numbers to the company that makes them (Marvel, DC, Image, etc.). The companies only print so many of each issue, depending on numbers they have from previous orders, subscriptions, advance orders, and market research. If the number they receive from Diamond matches or exceeds the number they have printed, the comic book has "sold out." What can you do? The best thing to do is to advance order. Advance ordering is when you purchase however many copies of an issue as you'd like to have before the comic is ever printed. In general, advance orders are placed 90 days early (three months). This is good for both you and the companies because you get deep discounts for ordering early and the companies know how many issues they need to print. Of course, you need to know which comic books you are going to want in advance, which is why advance order companies send out "previews" of upcoming titles and issues for you to browse before you order. Further, you can subscribe to titles through advance ordering, meaning you receive the title every month at a discounted price.
